Supplemental Instruction (SI)

What is it?

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an internationally recognized academic support program and has been proven to increase student success for those who engage in the learning process. At Tulane, students see the best GPA outcomes when they attend five or more SI Sessions. Based on traditionally difficult courses at Tulane, SI is a non-remedial approach that offers regular weekly review sessions outside of class in which students:

  • Work collaboratively in reading discussions
  • Practice problems
  • Compare notes
  • Work together to prepare for tests
  • Share ideas for improving learning

Who facilitates SI?

Regularly scheduled SI sessions are facilitated by trained Peer Tutors — undergraduate students who have previously taken the course and demonstrated academic success in that particular subject area. The Peer Tutor connects with the students who are taking that class for the first time. They sit in on class lectures, take notes, and act as a support system to those currently taking the course. Additionally, the Peer Tutor creates and facilitates follow-up study sessions throughout the week based on the course syllabus, faculty recommendations, the students’ needs, and what’s been going on in the class.

Why SI at Tulane?

SI is a free, voluntary opportunity for all students enrolled in a course that supports SI. Students who participate in SI can expect to:

  • Engage in group learning
  • Practice study and learning strategies
  • Review class material and prepare for quizzes and exams in a collaborative learning environment

If you are a faculty member interested in having Supplemental Instruction for your course, please contact Christie Kahil at ckahil@tulane.edu for more information.

Apply to be an SI Leader.

Spring 19 SI Schedule

The Spring SI Schedule will be posted by February 1.  If you are in an SI class, your SI Leader will be sending out a Doodle Poll to choose the best times for your weekly sessions.  Please respond to the Doodle Poll so your SI can pick a time that is convenient for the most people.

SI sessions are open to all student in a course, even if they are not attending the specific section indicated below.  Please note, however, that different sections may move through the material at a different pace or in a different order.  Check with the SI leader for the section to determine if they are covering the same material.

Faculty Testimonials

"I have only heard positive reviews from the students who have found the review sessions very helpful, especially for exam preparation. I think that this program can be beneficial for many courses here at Tulane." - Professor Kevin Morris, Department of Philosophy

"Students benefit from SI because they tend to get a peer's perspective of preparing for the exams." - Professor Meenakshi Vijayaraghavan, CELL1010 Intro to Cell & Molecular Bio

"The SI program provides my students with one-on-one time with a peer, which makes them feel more comfortable about asking questions about lecture content, homework, and exams." - Professor Michelle Sanchez, School of Science and Engineering

"SI provided my students a great role model for learning Chinese, giving them a very realistic goal and easing any anxiety they have about learning and speaking a foreign language." - Professor Nina DeMare, Asian Studies
